Sheriff's Department Settles Wrongful Conviction Suit
The Broward County Sheriff’s Department has agreed to pay $2 million to settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of a 57-year-old mentally disabled man who was wrongly c onvicted of six murders and one rape. Jerry Frank Townsend was released from prison eight years ago after DNA evidence showed that he had not committed the crimes. The lawsuit claimed the sheriff’s deputies fabricated and withheld evidence during the investigation and trial. Paula McMahon, South Florida Sun-Sentinel 09/22/2009
